I am Kirk Sklar, I have been operating Metal Heart Jewelry since 2007, and I have been a teacher since 1995. I have a masters degree in fine arts and a bachelors degree in art history. My teaching experience includes several years at craft centers, high schools, and colleges.

D.I.Y. Wedding Rings
It's wedding season! and people are thinking about making their wedding rings. I have worked with a few people already this month to create some really great engagement rings, and wedding bands. Some are silver, some are gold, some have put each others fingerprints on the bands, others are doing big beautiful sapphires instead of diamonds.

Cheyenne River Sioux Ice Storm Disaster
You may have heard the Dakotas had terrible ice storms this past weekend. The ice has brought down over 2,000-3,000 utility poles down on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Electricity has been out for five days (since Friday). Crews are working feverishly, but it may be out for up to 30 days in some areas. With no electricity, no heat, no running water, and a wind chill below zero the situation is growing more difficult.

A way to help:

Goto Amazon.com and order

Non-perishable food, Cots, Heat sources (heaters & fuel), Camp stoves & fuel,  Light sources: Lithium 1, 2 and 3 batteries for law enforcement, Lamps/Batteries/Lamp Oil, Toiletries, Toilet paper, Paper products for the shelters, Pampers/formula, Hand/baby wipes/Hand sanitizer

then ship to this address

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman’s Office Attn: Ice Storm
PO Box 590
2001 Main Street (Tribal Offices)
Eagle Butte, SD 57625
605-964-4155

No contribution is too small, anything you can do will make a difference.

Thank you,
Kirk Sklar

Creative block due to lack of tools?
Too often I hear students say, "I can't make what I want to make to make because I need an X" Where X is usually a tool they don't have. My response is "Look at what you have" too often we take for granted what we have and fail to see it, and it's inherent usefulness. In Jewelry making, innovation can come in the way of making an old tool do new tricks. I challenge you to revisit your tools with this new perspective. -Kirk

Jewelers' saw blades
Remember that saw blades come in 17 sizes from #8 to 8/0. If you are having trouble sawing, perhaps you need to switch blades. As the metal you are cutting gets thinner, you will need a finer blade. Also fine blades can be used on very thick metal, but coarse blades do not do well on thin metal. Happy sawing!
